The work reported in this paper can be grouped into threencategories: empirical investigations; analytical studies; and computernsimulations. The studies have identified the causes of high transientnovervoltages which are produced when switching high voltage shuntnreactors. Laboratory and site testing have shown that multiplenreignition is the most likely cause of the high overvoltages. Circuitnanalysis has been carried out to identify the conditions which lead tonmultiple reignitions. A computer model has been developed to allow thenlikelihood of multiple reignitions occurring to be assessed
