Operating temperatures of overhead lines have risen. Tests havenindicated that conventional sag tension calculations may underestimatensags that occur at the higher temperatures in ACSR (aluminum conductornsteel reinforced) spans. Search for the source of the disparities hasnidentified two effects associated with the manner in which conductorsnare manufactured. One effect involves residual stresses, resulting fromnstranding practice, in the finished conductor. The other is caused bynthe ability of the aluminum part of ACSR to bear axial compression.nAnalysis of these effects appears to explain the disparity in at leastnone of the test programs that revealed it
