This paper highlights results of a design study to optimize CAPSn(capacitor bank series group shorting) as applied to EHV and HV shuntncapacitor banks. The study concluded that CAPS can be built fromnstandard, commercially available components, and can have economicnadvantage over conventional shunt capacitor banks in certainnapplications. While technically viable, the challenge is findingnapplications where the benefits are great enough to overcome thenreluctance to try something new. Described are applicationnconsiderations and possible applications evaluated at BPA
