Phase equilibria in the system of erbium-silicon

The phase equilibria in the Er-Si system over the entire range of alloy compositions was investigated. The phase diagram has been plotted by means of differential thermal, X-ray and metallographic analyses. Five intermetallic compounds have been found to exist in the system: Er_5Si_3, Er_5Si_4, ErSi_1-x, ErSi and Si-deficient compound ErSi_2-b. The paths of formation and the temperature of phase transformations of all intermetallic compounds have been determined. The solid solubility of erbium in silicon and that of silicon in erbium are both negligible(less than 1 at./100).
