Introduction After the historic transfer of the Panama Canal by the USA to the Government of Panama on 31 December 1999, the administration, operation and maintenance of the Canal zone, and all its waterways, premises, structures and equipment, were transferred to the new autonomous Government agency, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). This agency succeeded the Panama Canal Commission that operated as part of the US-supervised operation of the Canal. The ACP continued the work of widening the Canal, which started in the 1990s. The procedures to further widen and upgrade the Canal took off and tolls were raised to finance plans.
