Europe's integration challenge

The expansion of short sea shipping and inland waterway transportation of freight is one of the key goals of the current EU White Paper which aims to create an integrated transport policy for 2010. Short sea shipping and inland waterway transport are two key elements of the current proposals to enhance intermodalism in Europe under the new EU White Paper, European Transport Policy for 2010: time to decide. This must provide a viable means of coping with the growing congestion of road infrastructure. It is clear that, until now, these modes have been underused despite the potential in terms of the capacity of coastline and sea and river ports.
