The long awaited extension to the Maasvlakte at the port of Rotterdam has come a step closer. On 11 May, the Dutch cabinet decided to start the official procedure - called PKB+ (Planological Key Decision) - which is to lead to the construction of Maasvlakte II. The first of four phases in this process is now underway. The construction is a long term and complicated matter and, due to the extent of the land reclamation required, environmental implications must be considered alongside economic factors.
