In terms of container throughput, Genoa now sits atop the region's ports thanks in large part to a strong performance by its Voltri Terminal Europa (VTE). Overall, Genoa recorded 1,500.632TEU in 2000 up 21,6% on 1999. This compares with its nearest rival, Barcelona with 1,370,000TEU - up 10.9% on the previous year.
