The Port of Aarhus' trading performance in 2001 would presumably earn resounding respect from any outsider. The port experienced an 8% growth in the amount of dry bulk handled, a 3% growth in containers and was soured only slightly by a 1% decline in liquid bulk. Turnover was £200m. But Bjarne Mathiesen, general manager of the port, takes the results with a mere shimmer of contentment. "As a whole the first two quarters of the year were good," he says. "We had 8-10% growth then. But by the end of the year that had fallen to 2%. We budgeted for this amount but it is new for us. We have been used to being far ahead of budgets."
