There is little doubt that a radical shake up of inland freight transportation has gained enough momentum that further progress is now inevitable. However, the direction this should take is still hotly debated. Many shippers and intermodal operators are concerned that the cost and efficiency of freight distribution may be adversely affected by recent proposals in the European Commission white paper: European Transport policy for 2010 -Time to decide. (Pdl November/December ‵01 issue). However according to Ted Wang, managing director of container shipping line OOCL Europe, road transport dominance needs to be challenged and investment needs to be accelerated. He outlines a list of projects that are not being fulfilled. "There is the Betuweroute rail link which has been delayed, the Iron Rhine rail link which has been postponed and the Rhine-Main-Danube infrastructure which requires urgent action."
