When she lies awake late at night, Liz Walker sometimes thinks she has become her own worst nightmare. -"I've always been an environmental activist," she says with a downward glance at her sandals. "Now I have turned into...a developer." But a developer is what Walker has had to become, in order to mold 176 acres of rolling meadows and woods in Ithaca, New York, into a new type of residential community: one that is more environmentally conscientious than today's typical suburban subdivisions. Construction of the new community, called EcoVillage, began last fall. Every aspect of the development project—from the site's overall land use to the type of toilets that were chosen for the individual dwellings—has been planned with the environment in mind.
