Modern antilock brakes were heralded as a major breakthrough in automotive safety when they became widely available some 15 years ago. They offered a new dimension of control even in the type of panic stop preceding an accident-preventing locked brakes and unresponsive steering. But now that most new cars and trucks are so equipped, safety organizations sifting through accident statistics in search of benefits are giving antilock braking mixed reviews. By Don Sherman
