Speed kills. Remember that one? That was the argument the go-slow lobby used in 1995 to try to convince Congress not to repeal the National Maximum Speed Limit, which amidst the energy crisis of 1973 established a 55-mph speed limit for all. Letting the states raise speed limits to 70 mph or beyond would directly result in more than 6,000 additional traffic deaths each year-or so the self-appointed safety advocates told us.
