An engine thatls off can't waste gas or pollute. Mazda's new Smart Idle Stop System ISISS) engine shuts down whenever it can—at red lights or in traffic. Hit the gas, and it starts again instantly. Volkswagen and other carmakers have used a similar trick for a few years. But rousing those slumbering engines tends to take time, make noise, and cause vibration. Mazda fixes all three problems by reviving the engine without using its electric starter motor.
