Richard Guilliatt met Ron Allum in a small workshop in Sydney, where Allum had been toiling away in secret for years. For his article (page 66), Guilliatt spoke extensively with those close to Allum-including his wife, and his collaborator James Cameron-in order to better know the talented but self-effacing engineer who helped send Cameron to the bottom of world's deepest ocean trench. Photographer Sam Kaplan routinely shoots product still lifes, so working with dolls to create the opening image for "Infant Possibilities" (page 50) wasn't too out of the ordinary-except for one thing. As the prop stylist took apart the dolls, their audio recordings would play inadvertently, making the studio sound-and look-more like a horror-movie set.
