Mustang Magic

It almost defies logic that Ford could build essentially the same car for 25 years without significant change, yet that's what they did from 1979 to 2004 with the Fox-platform Mustang. The Fox platform was originally designated "Fox" because it was designed as a contender to go head-to-head with Audi's new Fox (and VW's Dasher) in the late 1970s. Now a footnote in history, the Ford Fairmont was the short-lived car originally spawned by the original Fox platform. But in Mustang livery, the Fox platform lived a long and illustrious career, getting better and better with each iteration. Yet time finally caught up with the Mustang as it became hopelessly outdated by more progressive designs. Ironically, one of those designs—GM's F-body of Camaro and Firebird fame—became the victim of outdated technology. And like a spinster who shows up solo at a 70-year high school reunion, the Mustang found itself with no surviving dance partner.
