The oxidation of injection moulded specimens of polypropylene (PP), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) subjected to constant load has been studied with chemiluminescence. Stress induced chemiluminescence (SCL) was used to study the oxidation in situ of specimens exposed to loads between 0 and 100 of load at yield. No change in the course of oxidation was found due to load. Conventional chemiluminescence (CL) was used to calculate the total luminescence intensity (TLI) for specimens which had been pre-aged under stress and neither did the results of these measurements, in accordance with FTIR measurements, show any obvious sign of the oxidation being accelerated due to stress. Imaging chemiluminescence (ICL) was used to monitor the spatial distribution of oxidation across a stress profile in pre-aged specimens. The resulting images showed no sign of increased oxidation with increased stress.
