COAGULATION TREATMENT OF PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT USING PLANT-BASED TANNIN

摘要

A new commercial vegetal water-soluble polyphenolic Tanfloc, obtained from Acacia meamsii de Wild bark, was investigated using models of water and wastewater namely kaolin and palm oil mill effluent (POME). As it is biocompatible, widely abundant, and economically feasible, Tanfloc has high potential to be a suitable alternative for chemical coagulant, especially alum. A conventional jar test apparatus was employed for the tests. The highest turbidity removal efficiency was reported to be 91% and 44.6% with 2 and 3 mg L~(-1) of optimal Tanfloc doses at best pH (7 and 5) when treated with kaolin and palm oil mill effluent, respectively. FTIR measurement shows that carbonyl, nitrogen and methyl groups could play a major role on increasing the performance of coagulation capacity of Tanfloc in turbidity removal of wastewater. In brief, Tanfloc as a biocoagulant is eco-friendly and it improves water quality that meets the requirements of environmental conservatives.
