He loved Liverpool, and even when he was Playing bowls he used to chase the bowl up the green muttering "come on red."By 1972 when Gerry had moved to Communications Branch inHeadquarters, The IRA terrorist campaign was underway. in 1981 he came face to face with the full strength of their violence when a bomb was found dangling beneath his car, but he carried on. He was a profesional policeman and this was a hazard of the job.Now, almost two years later, this quict family man, who played Santa at Christmas for the children, was survived by his wife, two daughters and an unborn grandchild. His life taken cruelly by a faceless killer who escaped while Gerry lay dying on the pavement. He will never see the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal he worked so hard to earn, but his sacrifice will not be forgotten by those who continue to police our Province every day. Even more tragically, he was not to be the last to die. Only ten days later Reserve Constable Colin Carson gave his life too, 'How many more?' is as impossible to answer as 'Why?' Yet in fairness to the newspapers that endlessly carry the continual notices of death, something a little bit special was observed on this occasion, a little bit of humanitarianism in the words of a neighbourthat we would all do well to remember when the next headline appears. 'Gerry was a darling, a Christian man loved by everybody. He always said 'hello' even to people he didn't know. Policemen like Gerry are heroes'. They are also only human.
