HEAD CONSTABLE SAMUEL (SAM) ORR S1466, GC, MM, HLI, USC AND LONDONDERRY HARBOUR POLICE

Samuel Orr was born in Londonderry in 1894, the son of Andrew Orr a general labourer, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1911 with his two brothers and two sisters, they lived at 11 Albert Place, Londonderry. In 1914 the First World War had commenced and Samuel was to find himself in the ranks of the Highland Light Infantry. He was awarded a Military Medal for his service and on demobilisation as a Sergeant from the Army he later joined the 'A' Class, Ulster Special Constabulary where he was to achieve the rank of Special Head Constable. In the troubled times of 1922 Samuel was to perform two acts of gallantry, one on duty and one when off duty. In the former he arrested an armed criminal who was subsequently tried, convicted and imprisoned. In the latter case he tackled two armed IRA men in a Belfast pub being wounded twice in the struggle receiving a serious wound to his left shoulder which exited his left breast and being grazed in the shin. At the time Sam was in civilian clothes and was unarmed. His No 20 USC Platoon Officer Capt. Dickinson, recommended him for the award of the Constabulary Medal, known as the RIC VC. There were a number of problems here.
