Born on 10 November 1894 in County Cavan and was appointed to the RIC on 15 January 1914 and to the RUC on I June 1922. On the 19 March 1922 as a Temporary Sergeant he was returning to his station at Swatragh when he was overpowered by a number of IRA men. He was in uniform and unarmed. For three days and nights he was walked across fields and lanes to the Sperrins where he was put into a car and taken to the old workhouse at Glenties in Donegal. He refused to work scrubbing floors.After threats of death he became cook as he was the only one who could make Irish Stew. After five months as a prisoner he was released in exchange for five Free State soldiers who were prisoners in Northern Ireland.
