TRIBUTE TO TOM WYLIE RUC GC & RUC HISTORICAL SOCIETY BY JIM MCDONALD

Tom Wylie was a unique character in many ways and was able to convert his long interest in memorabilia of various types to a distinguished career as a member of the local history department of the Ulster Museum. It was here that Tom developed a wide ranging collection of items connected to the Ulster Volunteers through the development of Irish Military Regiments and the establishment of a unique collection of nursing badges. He was associated with a number of major exhibitions showing Ulster's industrial heritage. He majored in the development of the mineral water industry and of course was always interested in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for his topics. Tom always had time for people and particularly for those who in his own words 'suffered from the same disease - collecting'. But in the area of policing history Tom gave a lot of his time. As one of a very few civilians who were interested in policing Tom became a member of the committee of the RUC GC Historical Society. Here his knowledge of museum techniques became invaluable and I know how he looked forward to a new Museum to tell the story of policing.
