ROBUST NEW LAWS TO TACKLE ROAD TRAFFIC OFFENCES

Tough new penalties for those convicted of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving are soon to be introduced in Northern Ireland Criminal Justice Minister Paul Goggins said.rnThis is just one of a number of robust new measures being proposed by the Government to tighten the laws on road traffic powers and follows an extensive consultation process.rnAnnouncing the proposals under the forthcoming 2007 Criminal Justice Order Paul Goggins said: "Anyone who causes death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving could face up to five years imprisonment.rn"Too many people are killed or seriously injured on our roads as a result of irresponsible and careless driving. The terrible consequences of these actions which can to often lead to loss of life must be addressed and those who commit these dreadful acts must pay for their actions.
