Dominique Jean Larrey was a respected military surgeon in Napoleon's Army. He was a pioneer in battlefield medicine and particularly specialised in lower-limb trauma. He was the first to record many medical conditions including trench foot Larrey was born in July 17661 in the Pyrenees. His wider family consisted of several medical practitioners, yet his father was the village shoemaker. Larrey's childhood was brought to an abrupt end when his father died, and at the age of 13 and he was then sent to Toulouse to continue his education. He stayed with his Uncle Alexis who was Surgeon-in-Chief of the hospital and gave Larrey a thorough grounding in medicine and surgery.
