Commercialization of FBR Requires International Cooperation: Demonstration of Small FBR Needed

Industrialized countries, BRICs nations, and some policy makers in developing countries have accepted that nuclear power is the most effective means for the reduction of greenhouse gases, and these countries are introducing new development policies and increasing numbers of units at their current nuclear plant sites. This has spurred these countries that plan to actively deploy nuclear power in the future to seek ways to obtain uranium resources. There are currently 432 nuclear power plants around the globe, producing 390 GW of electricity, and it has been calculated that for this level of nuclear electricity generation uranium resources would run out in about 100 years. This is because the current mainstream light water reactors are only able to use a substantial amount of these uranium resources.
