The largest earthquake ever recorded in the history of meteorology in Japan (M 9.0, the largest seismic intensity of 7) occurred off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku region of Japan's main island at 14:46 on March 11, 2011. Following the quake, the massive tsunami of the height of over 10 m devastated the coast. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, known as the Great East Japan Earthquake in Japan, caused the region unprecedented damage and shook the nation. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Emergency Disaster Security Headquarters, the number of deaths, missing, and injured were 15,895, 2,539, and 6,157 respectively as of March 8, 2019. The leading cause of deaths was drowning in tsunami, which accounted for 90.64%, followed by deaths by collapsed buildings (crushed or severely injured to death under collapsed buildings) (4.23%), deaths by fire (0.92%), and deaths from unknown causes (4.22%).
