Areva said May 26 that it will not begin uranium recovery operations at the Imouraren project in Niger, which it said is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world, until market prices increase. “With current uranium prices not sufficient to allow profitable operation of the Imouraren deposit, the state of Niger and Areva will set up a joint strategic committee which will take a decision on the schedule for the start of mining the deposit depending on changes in the market,” Areva said in a May 26 statement. Areva spokesman Jerome Rosso, in a May 28 email, declined to say what price uranium would have to be for the Imouraren mine to be profitable.
