US EIA withholds second-quarter uranium data, citing confidentiality

The US Energy Information Administration could not release second-quarter 2020 domestic uranium production data because of confidentiality provisions that come into play when there are too few producers or production is concentrated among a small number of companies, EIA said in a report released Aug. 12. “Domestic uranium production has declined considerably in recent years, and activity did not reach a threshold where a specific production figure could be published without violating the protections that EIA has committed to provide,” EIA added. EIA nuclear energy specialist Tim Shear said in an Aug. 12 email, “Unfortunately, we revealed as much as we could without running afoul” of confidentiality rules. Those rules are based on the number of respondents and the concentration of production among the respondents, he noted.
