JAEA starts removal of fuel from Monju fast reactor

Japan Atomic Energy Agency started removing nuclear fuel from its Monju fast rector September 17 as part of the unit’s decommissioning process, a JAEA spokesman said in an interview September 18. JAEA aims to complete the removal of all 530 mixed-oxide, or MOX, fuel assemblies — including 463 spent fuel assemblies and 67 fresh ones — located in the reactor and in the sodium-coolant storage facility outside the reactor building by the end of 2022, JAEA spokesman Akira Kato added.
