Investor activity in the gold market during nthe first quarter of 2011 differed by region, nwith exchange-traded funds in the US and nthe UK experiencing net redemptions, while ndemand for their European and Indian counter-nparts increased, the World Gold Council said nWednesday. “Recent data shows a resumption nof net inflows in the latter half of March and nearly part of April,” the WGC said in its latest n“Gold Investment Digest.” The gold price rose nby 2.4% during Q1 to $1,439/oz by March n31, basis the London PM fix, a more mod-nest rise relative to average gains of 6.2%quarter over the past two years. Coin and bar npurchases remained high, while activity in nthe futures and the over-the-counter markets ndwindled in January but picked up by the end nof the quarter, the WGC said. “Collectively, nthe gold-backed exchange-traded funds that nthe World Gold Council monitors experienced nnet outflows during Q1 2011,” the report said.
