An indefinite walkout by tens of thousands of nPeruvian mine workers in the gold, copper, zinc nand lead sectors, among others, that was to nstart March 21 has been canceled because leg-nislators promised to enact two laws that miners nwant, a union leader said Friday. Luis Castillo, nwho leads the National Federation of Mining nand Metallurgical Workers of Peru, told Platts nby telephone Friday that there is a compromise nwith legislators for two new laws that will help nincrease miners’ retirement benefits, so strike nplans for Monday were called off. “This com-ning Thursday, Congress must approve a law to nraise the limit of the fund for retirement, to be nfollowed by another law in April” that would also nincrease benefits, he said. The national federa-ntion, which groups most of the miner unions nfor companies across Peru, had held a national nassembly in January during which the date nMarch 21 was chosen for the beginning of a nnational strike over retirement benefits.
