Two South African miners fire striking workers

More than 2,000 workers at thenBokoni platinum mine in Limpopo, northnof Johannesburg, went on a wild cat strikenon October 1 forcing the company to applynfor a court interdict to declare the strikenillegal. In a statement Tuesday, AtlastanResources Corporation, which owns thenmine, said the court interdict ruled in itsnfavor, compelling it to fire 2,161 workersnon strike. NUM President Frans Baleni confirmednthe dismissal at Bokoni and addednthat the Australian-owned Gold One east ofnJohannesburg has also laid off 1,400 of itsnstriking workers. “We do not have not haventhe details of the situation at those twonmines, but I would guess it will be tense inncoming days,” said Baleni. The raft of dismissalsnstarted at the world’s fourth largestnplatinum producer, Anglo American Platinum,nwith 12,000 on October 5 at its Rustenburgnmines, northwest of Johannesburg. BothnAngloplats and Bokoni workers have untilnWednesday to appeal their dismissals.
