The chief justice of the US Supreme Court on Thursday denied an application filed by the attorney general of Michigan to stay the Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards for power plants. Chief Justice John Roberts denied the application "for a stay or injunction pending the filing and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari," that was filed February 23 by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and attorneys general from 20 other states. MATS, as the EPA's program is known, is designed to reduce air pollution from coal and oil-fired power plants.
