Alberta grid operator eyes power lines for renewables surge

The Alberta Electric System Operator has identified 15 transmission projects that are needed over the next five years, including two designed to provide access to areas with strong renewable energy potential, Sami Abdulsalam, AESO director of transmission, said Wednesday during a meeting on the grid operator’s latest long-range transmission plan. The transmission plan places an increased focus on Alberta’s evolving economy, policy changes and environmental initiatives, including renewable generation additions and the phase-out of coalfired generation wherever possible, according to the AESO.
