Oregon eyes 3 GW of floating wind farms, a multibillion-dollar opportunity

Oregon's economy could get a boost from the construction of floatingoffshore wind farms, along with new ports, infrastructure andmanufacturing to serve them, according to the US National RenewableEnergy Laboratory."This would create an industrial economy for Oregon that's in therange of $7 billion to $10 billion for an industry that's scaled to about2.6 GW," Walt Musial, a principal engineer who leads NREL's offshorewind research program, said during an Oct. 21 meeting with state andfederal officials about a report from the laboratory. That would beenough to power more than 1 million homes and significantly reducethe state's carbon footprint, Musial said.
