A successful cyberattack can be as damaging to national and economic security as a missile attack, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission member Neil Chatterjee said. In May, a ransomware attack caused Colonial Pipeline to temporarily shut down its 5,500-mile pipeline, affecting millions of consumers along the East Coast for several days. Federal lawmakers and regulators have been vocal about the need for energy companies to invest in more secure cybersecurity technologies and processes to prevent similar service disruptions. Many have also called for additional regulatory reforms.
