Exelon CEO reaffirms plans to close Byron, Dresden nuclear plants this fall

Absent action by the Illinois General Assembly to provide financialsupport, Exelon will proceed with plans to close its Byron and Dresdennuclear power plants in the state this fall, the company’s president andCEO Chris Crane said May 5.Exelon announced Aug. 27 that it planned to shut Byron andDresden by the end of September and November 2021, respectively,because they "face revenue shortfalls in the hundreds of millions ofdollars because of declining energy prices and market rules that allowfossil fuel plants to underbid clean resources in the PJM[Interconnection] capacity auction." Byron-1 and -2 and Dresden-2 and-3 have a combined capacity of 4,354 MW.
