UK's INEOS launches renewable hydrogen business, targets EU's 2030 strategy

UK chemicals company INEOS plans to develop and build renewable hydrogen capacity across Europe, it said Nov. 9. The company produces 300,000 mt of hydrogen per year as a co-product, mainly from producing chlorine and cracking gas and oil to make olefins and polymers. It also, however, has expertise in electrolysis, the technology gateway to renewable hydrogen production. “Through its subsidiary INOVYN, INEOS is Europe’s largest existing operator of electrolysis, the critical technology which uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen for power generation, transportation and industrial use,” it said. INOVYN has been developing membrane electrolysis technology for 35 years, marketing and licensing bipolar (BICHLOR) and monopolar (FM1500) electrolyzers to the chlorvinyls industry. It has annual turnover of Eur3.5 billion ($4.2 billion) and 4,300 employees. The EU's Hydrogen Strategy outlines an infrastructure road map for deployment of at least 40 GW of electrolysis by 2030, producing up to one million mt of green hydrogen.
