Enel, Eni to develop 20 MW electrolysis capacity at Italian refineries

Italy's largest utility Enel and oil major Eni have agreed to jointly develop 20 MW of electrolysis capacity to supply hydrogen to two of Eni's Italian refineries, the companies said Dec. 2. The two pilot projects will involve electrolyzers of 10 MW in each case and are expected to start generating green hydrogen by 2022 or 2023, the companies said. An Eni spokesman said the company was "in an evaluation process. We will disclose the sites in the near future." The electrolyzers would be located "where green hydrogen appears to be the best decarbonization option" for the selected refineries, the companies said in the statement. Enel CEO Francesco Starace said Nov. 24 the companies were eyeing an overall roll-out of 120 MW of hydrogen capacity in Italy, so the pilot projects could quite feasibly be expanded to Eni's other sites.
