The federal government should still spend research money in the nowmaturewind and solar sectors because only the government has thedata, modeling and supercomputing to figure out how to best optimizerenewable projects and integrate them into the grid, panelists told USlawmakers Wednesday. The issue is significant because wind and solar power are nowcost-competitive with other types of energy and comprise a growingpart of the resource mix. And while one panelist said governmentresearch should be limited to foundational studies, a federal scientistsaid the sectors still need a massive amount of research.
