In the wake of a fiery April 2019 explosion at an innovative electrochemical storage facility in Surprise, Arizona, Arizona Public Service Co. put its plans for an aggressive expansion of lithium-ion battery storage indefinitely on ice. Its second such incident involving the technology, the catastrophic failure at the 2-MW Surprise Battery Storage System, also known as the McMicken project, sent a squadron of firefighters to the hospital, inflamed preexisting safety concerns about the chemistry and sparked interest in alternative storage technologies.
