Texas regulators on Thursday laid out the questions it wants answeredbefore deciding whether to implement real-time co-optimization ofenergy and ancillary services and the inclusion of marginaltransmission line losses in Electric Reliability Council of Texasgeneration dispatch decisions.Currently, ERCOT procures ancillary services in the day-aheadmarket to ensure grid reliability in real-time, but those services maybecome infeasible because of congestion or suppliers' failure to meetcommitments, which means ERCOT operators must conduct asupplemental ancillary services market process, which takes time andmoney and can result in unnecessary shortages.With real-time co-optimization, ERCOT could use its Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch engine, a computer system fordispatching generation, to "dynamically assign AS responsibilities"throughout the day and replace infeasible AS, an ERCOT study statesabout the proposal states.
