Mexico almost doubles solar power forecast, gas-fired capacity outlook remains unchanged

The new administration of Mexican President Andres Manuel LopezObrador has a more bullish forecast on solar photovoltaic buildup thanthe previous government, while maintaining an outlook that naturalgas-fired power-generation capacity will increase, a governmentplanning document showed.Mexico could install 19 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity over theperiod 2019-2032, according to the country’s latest version of the NationalElectric Development Program, known as PRODESEN. The PRODESENdocument is used by the government for electric power planning.Compared with PRODESEN’s version released last year underformer President Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico will install 9 GW moresolar capacity than previously projected.A quarter of all new solar generation capacity will be installed in theWestern Central region, which includes the states of Jalisco, Nayarit,Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Queretaro and municipalities in the statesof Michoacán, San Luis Potosi and Hidalgo.
