SRP proposes to expand Coolidge gas-fired power capacity as bridge to more solar

Salt River Project wants to expand capacity at its quick-start, naturalgas-fired Coolidge Generating Station plant to ensure a reliable backupfor the Arizona utility's planned increase of solar-generated power, SRPsaid Aug. 25.The proposal, which has been sent for approval to SRP’s Board,would increase the power plant’s number of single-cycle gas turbinesto 28 from 12, increasing the plant’s capacity by 820 MW, toapproximately 1,390 MW. Coolidge Generating Station has a quick-starttime of 10 minutes, according to SRP’s website.
