Global energy demand up 2.3% in 2018; CO_2 emissions up 1.7%: IEA

Energy demand worldwide grew by 2.3% in 2018, with an increase innatural gas use accounting for 45% of the growth, according to areport released by the International Energy Agency.At the same time, energy-related CO_2 emissions rose 1.7% to whatthe IEA called an “historic high” of 33.1 Gt, with the global power sectorresponsible for two-thirds of that growth.“Global electricity demand grew by more than 4% in 2018, to morethan 23,000 TWh,” the IEA said in its Global Energy & CO_2 StatusReport for 2018 released early Tuesday morning in Paris.
