NRC certification of APR1400 enhances competitiveness, says KHNP official

Certification by NRC of Korea’s APR1400 reactor will enhance the design’s ability to compete in the international nuclear market and pave the way for future construction of such units in the US, according to an official of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. “To get the local competitiveness in the market, we must get the [NRC design] certification, to prove that we are capable of constructing,” Yunho Kim, KHNP’s project manager for APR1400 design certification, said October 1 in an interview at the American Nuclear Society’s Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference in San Francisco. Regarding the possibility of future APR1400 construction projects in the US, “of course at present, the nuclear energy market is not as strong in the United States,” Kim said.
