NRC accepts St. Lucie license renewal application for full review

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for a fulltechnical review an application from Florida Power & Light for a second20-year extension of the operating licenses of its St Lucie-1 and -2, theagency said in a statement Sept. 29.The original 40-year operating licenses for the two pressurizedwater reactors, with a combined capacity of 2,213 MW, were issued inMarch 1976 and April 1983, respectively. The licenses were firstrenewed in October 2003 until March 2036 and April 2043, respectively.The additional 20-year renewal would allow each unit to produceelectricity through 2056 and 2063, a total of 80 years from when theystarted up.
