Molten salt reactor design completes Canadian licensing milestone

Moltex Energy has completed phase 1 of the Canadian Nuclear SafetyCommission's pre-licensing vendor design review of the company's300-MW small modular reactor, and spokeswoman Erin Polka saidJune 1 that phase 2 of the three-phase process "will likely begin in2022" and take at least two years to complete.Moltex announced completion of phase 1 in a statement May 25.The Moltex SMR is a molten salt reactor that runs on materialrecovered from processing spent fuel and the company aims to deploythe first reactor at Point Lepreau nuclear plant in New Brunswick in theearly 2030s. Moltex, which is based in New Brunswick, said March 18 itreceived C$50.5 million ($40.4 million) from the Canadian governmentto advance design and commercialization of its SMR and spent fuelreprocessing facility, and Ontario Power Generation said March 30 itwould provide C$1 million in funding to assist Moltex in demonstratingthe viability of a new process to reprocess used Candu fuel.
