NRC conducts special inspection at Entergy's River Bend over generator issues

NRC is conducting a special inspection at Entergy’s 992-MW River Bend-1 in Louisiana to review the circumstances related to the failure of five portable emergency diesel generators during testing, the agency said in a statement May 18. The generators are used to supply power to plant systems in the event of a prolonged loss of off-site electrical power and a failure of the permanently installed emergency diesel generators, NRC said. The EDGs were installed as part of safety enhancement at River Bend mandated by the NRC following the 2011 Fukushima I accident. The special inspection team "will review the circumstances surrounding these diesel generators to ensure we fully understand the issues involved. We have addressed the issue, and the NRC will review the corrective actions we have made," Entergy spokesman Mike Bowling said May 18. The team will review the failure of an EDG during a test at the plant, Bowling said. "On reviewing the situation, technicians determined a similar condition existed with four other diesel generators. The station concluded that two of the multiple, redundant diesels had remained functioning properly," he said.
