Bush plugs conservation; DOE to kick off campaign

With Gulf of Mexico production stymied and some refineries still down, the Bush administration is promoting energy conservation as aggressively as ever. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman is scheduled to kick off Monday (Oct. 3) a national "energy savings" campaign aimed at helping Americans cope with high winter fuel bills, one week after President Bush called on them to avoid nonessential road trips. "The administration is certainly recognizing that we're looking at potentially record prices for heating fuels this winter, and they are taking appropriate steps to educate the public about energy efficiency and what consumers can do to help themselves with energy bills," a spokeswoman for the Alliance to Save Energy, which will join Bodman in making the announcement, said Friday.
